Resin Bath

The tub and drum are used to coat carbon and glass filaments prior to being wrapped onto a cylindrical mandrel. This is a component of the Torpedo launch tube machine shown in another project section. The tub and drum (as well as all other components) are made from 304 stainless steel sheet and billet. The entire assembly was TIG welded together with great care taken on the drum assembly – the drum was made from tube and sheet stock and then welded to the center axle. The entire drum was then turned on a lathe to achieve >.001” concentricity about the center axle. The drum has to run within .002” of the ground blades that sit on the center arches to effectively “squeegee” off the resin as the filaments are pulled through the bath assembly.
